How to Become a Fashion Designer in India: A Real World Guide

Updated: June 2026 | Written by: Saroj Jain, Fashion Designer

People ask me this all the time. How do you become a fashion designer? The short answer is there is no single path. I did not go to NIFT. I learned by working with artisans, understanding fabrics, and making things for real clients. That hands on experience taught me more about design than any classroom could have.

But I also know designers who came from fashion schools and are doing excellent work. The truth is both paths work. What matters is how much you care about the craft.

Do You Need a Fashion Design Degree?

You do not need a degree to become a fashion designer in India. Some of the best designers I know never went to design school. They learned by apprenticing with a senior designer, working in a boutique, or training with traditional artisans. That said, a degree from NIFT, NID, Pearl Academy, or a similar institution gives you structure, industry connections, and placement support. It also helps if you want to work for a large brand that requires a qualification on paper.

If you are choosing between a degree and hands on training, consider this: a degree costs 4 to 8 lakhs for three years and gives you a certificate. Direct apprenticeship costs nothing and gives you real experience. Many successful designers did both studied fashion design AND worked under someone senior before starting out on their own.

What Skills Do You Need to Be a Fashion Designer?

Fashion design looks glamorous from the outside. The reality is different. You need to understand how fabric behaves how silk falls differently from georgette, how cotton breathes, how tissue fabric catches light. You need to know stitching, pattern making, and draping. You need to understand colours what works together and what clashes. You need to talk to clients, understand what they want, and translate vague ideas into actual garments. You need to manage budgets, timelines, and sometimes difficult clients.

The most important skill is not drawing or sewing. It is understanding people. A good fashion designer listens more than they talk. The best designs I have made came from clients who told me exactly what they wanted, not from me imposing my ideas on them.

Steps to Becoming a Fashion Designer in India

Step 1: Learn the basics. Take a course, find a mentor, or apprentice with a working designer. Learn pattern making, draping, fabric knowledge, and stitching. Step 2: Build a portfolio. Document everything you make. Even your early work matters. A portfolio shows how you think, not just what you have made. Step 3: Get experience. Work with a brand, a boutique, or start taking small orders from friends and family. Step 4: Find your focus. Bridal wear, daily wear, Indo Western, sustainable fashion pick one area and go deep. Step 5: Start your own label or grow within a brand. Both are valid paths.

I started my label Saroj Jain after years of working directly with artisans and understanding what women actually want to wear. That experience shaped everything I do today.
