I have been working as a fashion designer in Bangalore for years now. One question I hear from young designers and interns all the time is about money. How much does a fashion designer actually earn? Not the glamorous numbers you see on Instagram. Real numbers.
A fashion designer salary in India varies a lot depending on experience, location, and whether you work for a brand or run your own studio. Entry level designers with 0 to 2 years of experience earn between Rs. 2.4 lakh and Rs. 4 lakh per year. That is roughly Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 35,000 per month. After 3 to 5 years, salaries go up to Rs. 5 lakh to Rs. 8 lakh per year. Senior designers with 7 to 10 years of experience earn Rs. 10 lakh to Rs. 18 lakh per year.
These numbers come from my own experience and from what I have seen across the industry in Bangalore. They match data published by the National Institute of Fashion Technology placement reports and industry salary surveys.
Fashion Designer Salary Depends on Where You Work
Big brands pay more than small studios. A fashion designer working for a known label in Delhi or Mumbai earns 20 to 30 percent more than someone doing the same job in a smaller city. Bangalore sits in the middle. The city has a mix of big labels, independent designers, and export houses. A mid level fashion designer in Bangalore earns between Rs. 5 lakh and Rs. 9 lakh per year on average.
Running your own studio is different. When I started Saroj Jain, my income was unpredictable for the first two years. Some months were good. Some months I barely broke even. But after building a steady client base, a successful independent fashion designer in India can earn Rs. 12 lakh to Rs. 25 lakh per year or more. The ceiling is higher when you work for yourself, but the floor is lower too.
Fashion Designer Salary by Specialization
Bridal designers tend to earn more than ready to wear designers because bridal work is custom, detailed, and commands higher prices. A bridal fashion designer with 5 years of experience in Bangalore can charge Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 2 lakh per bridal outfit depending on the work involved. If you take 5 to 6 bridal orders a month during wedding season, the numbers add up quickly.
Textile and apparel designers working for export houses earn steady salaries but have less earning potential on the side. Freelance fashion designers charge by the project. A freelance designer in Bangalore can charge Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 50,000 per collection depending on the brand and the work involved.
How Fashion Designer Salaries Compare in India
A junior fashion designer in Bangalore starts around Rs. 2.5 lakh per year. The same role in Mumbai starts around Rs. 3 lakh. In Delhi it is about Rs. 2.8 lakh. The difference is mostly because of cost of living and the concentration of fashion brands in each city.
After 5 years, the Bangalore salary catches up. A senior fashion designer with good skills and a portfolio can earn the same in Bangalore as in Mumbai, because the city has a strong bridal and wedding market. Bangalore weddings are big business, and good fashion designers are in demand.
