Bridal Trousseau Shopping Checklist: Complete Wedding Shopping Guide

Updated: June 21, 2026 | Written by Saroj Jain, Fashion Designer, Bangalore

A bridal trousseau is the complete collection of outfits a bride wears during her wedding celebrations. A typical Indian wedding has 4 to 6 functions, each requiring a different outfit. Planning the trousseau early saves money, reduces stress, and ensures every outfit fits perfectly. At our JP Nagar boutique, we help brides plan their entire trousseau in one or two visits. Brides who plan ahead spend roughly 15 to 20 percent less than those who buy piece by piece under time pressure.

This guide covers a complete trousseau shopping checklist with a timeline for each function. Saroj Jain creates custom bridal trousseaus for all budgets. Shop at sarojjain.com or book a consultation at meet.sarojjain.com.

Quick Summary

  • A full bridal trousseau has 5 to 7 outfits for different functions
  • Start shopping 3 to 4 months before the first wedding event
  • Plan a budget before you start. Trousseaus range from Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 1,00,000+
  • Custom outfits need 6 to 8 weeks. Ready-to-wear pieces can be bought anytime
  • Coordinate colours across functions so each outfit looks distinct in photos

Bridal Trousseau Checklist by Function

The number of outfits depends on how many functions you have. Most South Indian and North Indian weddings have 5 to 6 events. Here is a typical trousseau list based on what our brides choose at the JP Nagar boutique.

Haldi outfit. A yellow or green cotton co-ord set or kurta set. This function is casual and turmeric stains the fabric. The Yellow Chikankari Co-Ord Set (Rs. 2,490) is our most popular haldi choice. Budget: Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 3,000.

Mehendi outfit. A bright green or pastel co-ord set or chikankari kurta. Lightweight cotton or georgette. The Sea Green Chikankari is popular for mehendi. Budget: Rs. 2,490 to Rs. 3,500.

Engagement outfit. A tissue saree, silk ensemble, or co-ord set in pastel or jewel tone. The Golden Crush Tissue Saree (Rs. 2,499) or Truffle Silk Ensemble (Rs. 2,499) work. Budget: Rs. 2,500 to Rs. 5,000.

Sangeet or cocktail outfit. A co-ord set, sharara, or Indo-Western gown in a festive colour. The Black Shadow Co-Ord (Rs. 3,500) or Blueberry Gold Glaze (Rs. 2,800) are popular. Budget: Rs. 2,800 to Rs. 5,000.

Wedding ceremony outfit. A bridal lehenga, silk saree, or heavy anarkali. This is the most expensive and most important outfit in the trousseau. Budget: Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 50,000+.

Reception outfit. A tissue saree, silk saree, or lightweight lehenga in a different colour from the wedding. The Golden Crush Tissue Saree is a popular reception choice. Budget: Rs. 2,500 to Rs. 10,000.

2 to 3 months before. Order custom outfits. The engagement, sangeet, and reception outfits need 6 to 8 weeks for custom stitching. Book your blouse stitching appointments. Order family coordinated outfits if needed.

4 to 6 weeks before. Buy ready-to-wear pieces. The haldi and mehendi outfits can be bought off the rack or ordered online. Confirm all custom orders are on track. Attend fitting appointments.

2 to 3 weeks before. Final fittings. Collect all outfits. Check that everything fits and all accessories like blouses, dupattas, and belts are complete.

1 week before. Pack everything. Steam or iron all outfits. Check that jewellery, footwear, and bags are coordinated with each outfit. Keep a small emergency kit with safety pins, extra hooks, and matching thread.

Tips for Planning Your Trousseau at Saroj Jain

Start with the wedding outfit and work backward. The wedding outfit determines the colour palette for the rest of the trousseau. If your wedding lehenga is red, choose different colours for each function so every outfit looks distinct in photos. Yellow for haldi, green for mehendi, pastel for engagement, jewel tone for sangeet, gold or pastel for reception.

Book a trousseau consultation at meet.sarojjain.com. In one session, we can show you options for all functions, discuss fabric choices, and create a timeline. Brides who book a single trousseau consultation save roughly 2 to 3 separate shopping trips. We keep your measurements on file for all custom orders, so you only need to be measured once. If you are coordinating family outfits, bring a list of who needs what and their approximate measurements.
